The first time I saw Giacometti’s work was at Art Institute of Chicago.

Later when I got back to Shanghai, I started to really explore him and his lifeworks, from sketches to paintings, then sculptures. Giacometti’s works on figures and portraits really reflect his mental state. The subtle lines in his sketches paintings conduct feelings and emotions over. The dark tone of his sculpture gives a sense of burning, indicating his reflection on the world wars. In almost all of his works, the figures are elongated, marking his unique style.

Then I start to explore my own understanding as well as interpretation of his style. The whole process is quite complex but, interestingly, promising.

I first use Chinese brush and ink, intentionally making my figures to try to search for a sense of esthetic, creating abstract figures. Then I started to use acrylic brush on study of landscape, to research over the use of texture, reflecting how to get those textures onto my figures. In the early process, I find my figures really dead and plain. So I begins to dig into the actual bone structures of human beings, to understand how the skin and muscles physically cover the inner organs. I start to sketch bones and figures with the form of bones on my notebook every day, which helped me a lot on understanding how to really portrait a human form.

After that, I look back at Giacometti’s work, to help myself creates a figure that blends into the background. I ended up changing a lot of medium, first from Chinese brush, then to acrylic brush, and in the end to my bare hands, in order to physically conduct my personal emotion onto the glass.

By the near end, I start to really reflect on the question of add and subtract: how much is necessary, when is too much, and how to reduce in order to stand some parts out. Luckily, I managed to create a moderate balance between the emptiness and fullness, with helps of different sets of tools such as dried brush and iron comb. In the end, I have created this monochromatic spirit in respect of my aesthetic, with its form of human but deform of details.

Hello everyone, my name is Barbara Bao, an art student who just finished the college application. I got offers from several good art colleges, including Parsons the New School of Design; and my work is this. This work is inspired by Picasso’s piece called Muse, produced in 1935. In Picasso’s piece of work, the broken lines (meaning his lines are not like others’, his is broken into pieces to create the effect), strong outline to depict the characters, and you can see the distortion of human body. The arms, the legs are all elongated, also the background is broken down into geometrical shapes -- this is Picasso’s style, in short. Inspired by all these characteristics, I produced one of my own work, using the elements appearing in the original piece. For instance, the woman and the mirror, also the plant on the table. In my piece of work, the woman is holding the mirror instead of drawing portrait of herself by looking into the mirror.

  Pablo Picasso

I noticed that the palette that Picasso used was very special, so I tried to work harder to find the right and subtle palette of my own that reflects my aesthetic. The palette is very soft, I mixed five to six colors together to create some color that is mild and will illustrate the character vividly. Of course, every area is not standing on its own, they have to intersect with each other. By saying that, I mean all of the colors need to be connected. To achieve that, I recycled most of the single colors. For example, when I’m trying to get the orange of the muse’s hair, I won’t simply use orange, I will also use camel, yellow and even green. In other words, even the option of palette for me is limited, but I varied the combination, so I can have more subtle and suitable color.

The way that I’m using the palette is also different from normal art works. The method is called aplat-- a plain use of palette. But it doesn't mean that everything in my work has to be flat. I still managed to find the way to create 3D effect using this technique. I created contrast among each section, using slightly darker or lighter palette -- so that the picture is moving with rhythm. Because the objects will have different surfaces, instead of just one big column. I create the 3D effect more in the front where the character is. While doing this, I have to be careful because if I put too much effort on the character, then the woman will not be connected with the background -- almost like she is isolated, which is not what I want.

And of course, I emphasize the outline more than I usually do, on the main characters. The goal of doing that, is to let the main character stand out of the background, to create the depth to the piece. Because that’s one way to create layers. Likewise, to mimic Picasso’s style, the shape of the women in this drawing is distorted. As for the background, I use some geometrical shapes, to form the contrast with the organic shapes at the front.

After all that consideration and steps, my interpretation of Picasso’s master piece, the Woman with Mirror is finished.

It is my 11th year in study art and I am really glad to participate in the event this meaningful year. My painting is based on two paintings -- "Lyrical Explosion No.8" and "Untitled".

  Alberto Magnelli

I used some very representative elements from them, for example, the strongly contrastive colors and simple shapes. However, I also added some new things in them. You can see some visual images of a strong contrast in my painting, but they are soft and specific. Furthermore, I mixed irregular shapes and simple squares which are originally the main part of "Untitled". To make the strong comparison of the colour not that sharp, I put the contrast colours in the same zone. The gentle strokes on them give you a feeling of softness and freshness. I chose grey color for the background to make the main part more clean-cut and vivid. Through the painting, I really enjoyed the joy of art, and I hope everyone can feel that excitement!

After the first bell rang, we followed our homeroom teacher going to the auditorium. We were all puzzled about this sudden decision. When we got in, the empty seats were waiting for us. Besides our art teacher stood behind the podium and waited for the silence.

This lecture was about Pompidou Modern Art. The teacher described the Pompidou by such lots of different ways. From Centre National d'art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, one of the most famous art museums in Paris,to the “Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou”. Students could learn much more about what is the modern art.

A senior gave us a speech to share his experiences and his own opinions after the teacher’s introduction. Many students prepared to contribute their paintings since SUIS has been chosen as one of the ten schools can take part in the Pompidou Art Exhibition. The topic of this activity is learning, learning from those masters’ paintings and minds. Then add own emotions on their drawings. The senior talked about his improving and practicing. He even made a joke with saying ”I sometimes practice my painting techniques”. We were all particularly impressed by his humorous sentences which contained with truth. We realized that art is from life.

These artists showed their works and the drawing processes. Besides the senior who came forward first, the most unforgettable artist is a student is from Grade 7, just like us. We were all surprised while she was giving a presentation because it is really amazing that there is a real artist around us. Even though this student was a bit nervous, she absolutely conveyed her ideas to us. We need a pair of eyes which can discover the beauty in our life. Then two kinds of cat food with different colors mixed together can be a stunning colour for a part of painting.

That is why the art makes human obsessed. Some people say that the camera would cause art to become extinct. In fact, the world of artists is still exciting!
